Our Sailing Fleet
Whether you’re sailing for pleasure or competition, just beginning or an old sea dog, there’s a welcome for you at the North Shore Yacht Club! Members are encouraged to sail their own beach launched sailboats from our beautiful lakefront facilities throughout the season. Alternatively the club-owned fleet of sailboats includes a large selection of Sunfish and several Barnett 1400’s, available exclusively for NSYC members’ use.
Members qualify to use club-owned boats by passing required classes and skills assessments. See Adult Learn to Sail for info about our 7-week Learn To Sail (LTS) program, utilizing Sunfish and Barnetts. Experienced sailors may qualify to use Club Sunfish and Barnetts by passing the Dinghy Sailing Assessment Course which includes a brief online class and an on-water swim and skills assessment. Sign up here for Dinghy Sailing Assessment; membership is required.
NSYC is home to Buccaneer 18 racing, with opportunities to learn and crew on these larger, privately owned boats. Buccaneer 18 Facebook

Rigging a Sunfish– is easy and if you need to remember some of the details check out this NSYC video: YouTube - Rigging a Sunfish. Probably the best short video out there on how to rig a Sunfish!
Sunfish
Sunfish sailing is one of the main activities of the North Shore Yacht Club. The Sunfish is a 14 ft, beach launched sailing dinghy generally sailed by one person. With a single triangular lateen sail, a simple rig, and a wide beam, the stable Sunfish is the most popular fiberglass sailboat ever built. Both youth and adults enjoy this beautiful boat. If you're looking for lots of tiller time, pleasure or racing, this is the boat for you!
Barnett 1400
The Barnett 1400 is a classic dinghy sailboat for both novice and experienced sailors. It offers performance, stability, and comfort and is readily maneuverable. 14 feet long, it has a shallow draft and a wide beam, with controls that make sailing intuitive and accessible. The open cockpit design offers comfortable seating and plenty of room for movement - ideal for both solo sailing and additional crew members. It has an unstayed rig with a loose-footed main sail, a kick-up rudder and a retractable centerboard
