Clothing & Equipment for Sailing Club
Required:
Water shoes We have a beach of pebbles and rocks at the water line. Sandals and open shoes (Crocs) don’t work because the pebbles get inside and the shoes fall off in the water. Water shoes, sailing booties, or old sneakers are all good. If you don’t have proper shoes you will not be enthusiastic about helping with launching and putting boats away. That places an undeserved burden on students who are properly dressed. Wool socks, even when wet, help keep your feet warm.
Personal Flotation Device (a life preserver) properly fitted and fastened, is required whenever a club member is in or on the water. NSYC has a few PFDs available, but having your own, properly fitted, is far safer and more comfortable. Highly recommended.
Clothing appropriate for the air and water temperature As the season progresses into fall having the right clothing to stay warm will augment your enjoyment and your attendance more than anything.
Recommended Gear
Bring layers:
Swim wear for the warmest days
Polyester fleece tops and leggings as air and water get colder
Water-proof jacket or pullover
Warm hat…a wool knit hat works great
Hydro skin tops and bottoms (REI) are the next layer to add
The next level of cold weather gear is a 3-5 mm wet suit. (We don’t sail in temperatures that require more.)
Sailing gloves will protect your hands, important as you learn to sail in stronger winds.
Towel, dry clothing, and shoes to change into after sailing
If in doubt about equipment or clothing our instructors and coaches will be glad to make recommendations.
