I heard a phone ringing in one of the boats down at the Park Ave. beach storage.
Looks like the wind will calm tomorrow afternoon. Anyone interested in kayaking one last time this year?
I am planning to be at beach to start out kayaking at 5pm. Does anyone want to join me?
We are looking for Youth Sailing Volunteers for tomorrow from 9:30am-12:30pm. Please let me know if you can make it.
Is anyone planning to go out on the SUPs at 4:00 Thursday, August 29?
Racing Workshop - Aug 3, Saturday 1:00 - 4:00
The wind was perfect. We got to go out for a few practice races before a big dark cloud headed our way.
- we practiced sitting on the starting line so we all had great starts
- we practiced beating to windward using telltales to make sure are sails were trimmed properly
- we practiced steering downwind using the rudder as little as possible - heal the boat to steer, sail in or out to steer.
Interesting in Kayaking Tuesday evening 5:30 or so? Weather should be past - cooler with no wind!
Is the kayaking class at 9 a.m. still on today?
June 29th Racing Workshop
No wind, so we played various scenarios on my new toy - magnetic whiteboard with magnetic boats.
Do we need wetsuits for the Kayak Clinic this week?

Anyone want to paddle Friday if the forecast holds up (70 and sunny)? I'd be bringing my own kayak, as I'm not yet certified to use a club boat. Hopefully this is OK (I'm new). Shout outs to those who attended the Racing Workshop yesterday...
We talked about steering and responding to winds shifts without the rudder, and starting strategies. This was a multi-media discussion with sailing pictures from Mike West's Florida regatta a few months ago.
I bigger shout out to Kaite and Tacy Mack, and Terry Hinaris who went out to practice in very shifty winds.

Terry Grossberg left us a message on Feb 18 that he'll support Boaters at Park Ave Beach. On Feb. 25 we asked "What's your specific plan Terry"? NO RESPONSE.
Thank you for your comments, albeit broad, what is your commitment of the protected launch and barge project. The Barge is crumbling and currently closed. The barge is critical to all types of boat launching because it provides access to Powerboats, larger Sailboats, PWC and protection from launching directly into heavy surf for smaller watercraft. At least 20 years old, there is no plan in place, or being publicly addresss, as agreed to by the Park District Board to repair or replace this critical component of Highland Park's only boating facility. It's great to talk about support and long term commitment to Park Ave Beach but what will YOU do to ENSURE boat launching in 2017 and beyond? Residents and Members want to know - what's your plan?
Kayak storage on the beach at Park Ave in Highland Park is arranged through the Park District of Highland Park. You will find a link to their BOAT STORAGE information and costs on the Contact Us page of our Website

We had a great turnout for our Racing Workshop last Saturday, July 11th. Present were:
It's great to see so many new sailors interested in racing.
We did not get on the water. There was very little wind and the radar showed approaching storms. We did a lot of chalk talk on a typical Race Course, Rules around the course, and then rigged a boat to see what the little wind we had would do to the sail.
I hope some of the newer sailors join the Sunday races.
Looking for up to three used Optis to purchase. If you have a used boat you would be willing to sell or donate to a small lake, please contact me at: 312-914-2535 or email@example.com
Results are now posted online:
Another great racing day at Park Ave. Beach... with 5 Sunfish and 5 Buccs competing today, with the participation of our always welcome Thistle of Bill & Barbara Perley!
Jim Irwin leads the Bucc fleet, followed by Dave Mecklenburger and Axel Anderson. Mike West leads the Sunfish fleet, followed by Ronaldo Borger, Steve Knapp and Michael Homer.
What an awesome day on the waters of Lake Michigan @ Park Ave Beach today! With great SE winds we had all of our fleets represented: Sunfish, Buccaneer, Bill & Barbara's Thistle, and even a couple 420s!
Results are now posted online (thank to Leland for his racing software!), with great competition on both fleets.
See the results for our first racing Sunday (6/14) of 2015!
NSYC 2015 Sailing Class is Full
Interested in learning to Sail, Kayak, Stand Up Paddle Board? NSYC will host an Open House with tours, boats on display, instructors available for Q&A. Stop in and join us for a brief tour! It's a great way to spend the summer.
The 2015 Michigan Open Sunfish Regatta will be held at Gull Lake, MI (near Kalamazoo) on June 6-7th. I've attended the last two and really enjoyed it. There is a modest entry fee, but membership in the USSCA is NOT required.
Give it consideration...
Looking at our High Def WebCam, it looks like the sand ramp is almost done, the Power Boat launch is almost ready too. May 2nd is Official Opening Day for the Park Ave Boat Launch! Now we just need some warm and sunny Spring days and we are ready to go! Look forward to a wonderful season at the NSYC!

In regards to the 20 million marina, the local residents voted it down as they didn't want to pay for an enormous marina with excessive traffic.
WHAT TO DO? I suggest we build up our numbers again (with sailors, motor boaters, kayakers, outdoor enthusiasts, etc.) and request that the PDHP come up with a moderately-sized marina (like we currently have) and build it on the north beach. It will take money to construct, but not $20 million. It needs to be considerate of the neighbors, not add any additional parking, and accomodate the activities we love on Lake Michigan.
Other: Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve Restricted Access: Please write to your Lake County Forest Preserve commissioner before April 28th. Tell them you don't want Plan A or B (http://www.lcfpd.org/preserves/improvement-projects/) which restrict parking and walkability, but you want Plan C (Cohen Plan) or D (As-is). Tell them you love and enjoy access to Lake Michigan and a Forest Preserve should be available to the public and not restricted so only private homeowners or nearby locals can walk to the site.
I'm wowed by the new NSYC website. Good job webmasters: Leland Brode, Laura Santucci, Liz Riesche, and all the copy contributors/editors!
"AMAZING, SWEET, PROFESSIONAL" all great words to describe the NSYC new website! Thank you Leland Brode and Laura Santucci - we give you a STANDING OVATION! Beautiful work. Think I'll sign up for a Membership today!

Summer's End Regatta Results - Aug 30, 2014
It was a windy day with gusty SW winds. The Race Committee headed by Bill Perly abandoned races around 1:30, just after a Laser start when gusts hit the high 20's and knocked down a few Lasers. The Waukegan weather station shows winds at 22 kts with gusts to 29.9 at 1:30 PM.

We had our second workshop last Saturday and it was well attended. I usually arrive at these events and have to wait for interested sailors to show up. This time there were several sailors waiting for me when I arrived 5 minutes late.
Present were: Mike West, Dave Sogin, Fern Anderson, Emma Homer, Michael Homer, Bill Perley and Lina Garcia.
With the help of drawing pictures on NSYC's giant whiteboard on an easel we talked about going fast - use your tel-tails to make sure your sail is properly trimmed, rules at the start - don't barge (although this term is not in the rule book), and watching for wind shifts. We rigged our boats, doubled checked everyone's rig, and headed out for some practice races. It was a perfect west wind. We did several races, had many winners, and rescued new sailor Lina from ending up in Michigan.
Not to forget those who participated in our first workshop of the season - the following were present on June 28th - Gina Morri, Paul Gugenheim, Roman Shraybman, Chris Buce, and Ronaldo who showed up after his favorite team finished their World Cup game.
I am not near the lake, but it looks like it's calm...anyone up for a paddle this evening?
Bonnie & I will be out for an early paddle tomorrow around 7:30 a.m. Feel free to join us but check the weather or Web Cam first - could be high waves / Small Craft.
Anyone interested in Kayaking tomorrow, Fri. July 4th, around 6 or 7 AM?
Call or email me.
WE ARE ALMOST THERE!!!
We currently have a Sunfish, Race Committee boat, Kayaks, and SUPs (Standup Paddleboards) identified for the parade. All that is left is for members to show up Thursday evening, 6-8PM, to clean and decorate the boats. Then Friday morning (before 9AM), we can all march in the parade with our club boats. For questions call Jamie at 847-910-1998
Hats off to Leland for his hard work and dedication to getting the new blog working!
