.NSYC Youth Sailing Activities

The North Shore Yacht Club is committed to supporting youth sailing.

High School Sailing Club
Students from Highland Park and Deerfield High Schools and other nearby high schools may join The North Shore Sailing ClubThe sailing season begins, when school starts in the fall and continues through the end of October.  The high school sailing club has two divisions: Sailing Club, and Racing Team..  Both Divisions meet on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons after school until 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday afternoons from 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Recreational sailors receive instruction and on the water supervision in basic sailing skills and safety practices.  Once certified in boats, typically Sunfish, they may sail for fun on club sailing days as well as at other times on weekend days, when at least two adult club members are also sailing and aware of their presence.

Racing Team sailors have advanced sailing skills and primarily engage in drills designed to improve boat handling, racing strategy, and racing tactics as well as competing in practice races against other club members.  Each year Racing Team sailors compete against sailors from other high schools in regional regattas.

A NSYC Junior Membership is required to participate in high school sailing activities.  The cost for an annual Junior Membership is $100, which is waived if the student's family has an annual membership.  High school sailors also pay an equipment fee of $50 per year to our non-profit organization: The North Shore Youth Sailing Coalition.  The coalition raises money to support youth sailing in various ways including purchasing equipment and providing sailing opportunities for the economically disadvantaged.

Annual Junior Memberships
We encourage parents of young sailors or young people who want to learn to sail to join the NSYC with a family membership ($260).  That way everyone in the family can enjoy the sailing and social opportunities the club offers.  However, the club also offers a Junior Membership for youth from 13 to 20 years old.  The Junior Member annual fee is $110. Seventeen Sunfish, three Club 420s, and a Laser are available for member use.  All members including Junior Members must be certified for each boat type by a NSYC Instructor.

Young sailors 13 and over who have never sailed before may apply to join our 8-week adult sailing classes in June and July.  Saturday and Sunday sessions are offered.  Select Sailing Lessons on the home page.
