Summer's End Regatta 2014 Results Aug 31, 2014   Author:  Leland

Summer's End Regatta Results - Aug 30, 2014

It was a windy day with gusty SW winds.  The Race Committee headed by Bill Perly abandoned races around 1:30, just after a Laser start when gusts hit the high 20's and knocked down a few Lasers.  The Waukegan weather station shows winds at 22 kts with gusts to 29.9 at 1:30 PM.

Sunfish Racing Workshop Aug 21, 2014   Author:  Leland

We had our second workshop last Saturday and it was well attended.  I usually arrive at these events and have to wait for interested sailors to show up.  This time there were several sailors waiting for me when I arrived 5 minutes late.

Present were: Mike West, Dave Sogin, Fern Anderson, Emma Homer, Michael Homer, Bill Perley and Lina Garcia.

With the help of drawing pictures on NSYC's giant whiteboard on an easel we talked about going fast - use your tel-tails to make sure your sail is properly trimmed, rules at the start - don't barge (although this term is not in the rule book), and watching for wind shifts.  We rigged our boats, doubled checked everyone's rig, and headed out for some practice races.  It was a perfect west wind.  We did several races, had many winners, and rescued new sailor Lina from ending up in Michigan.

Not to forget those who participated in our first workshop of the season - the following were present on June 28th - Gina Morri, Paul Gugenheim, Roman Shraybman, Chris Buce, and Ronaldo who showed up after his favorite team finished their World Cup game.

4th of JULY PARADE Jun 18, 2014   Author:  FAMILY ACTIVITIES
Come decorate boats and ride in the 4th of July Parade this year.  We will have a Sunfish with the Colorful Sunset Sail, filled with kids, a Kayak and SUP on top.  Great Family FUN!

We need volunteers!!!

We need kid volunteers:  We need kids to help decorate the boats, paint a banner, ride in the Sunfish, and walk the parade.  Kids, bring your squirt guns (or Hydro Bazookas).

We need adult volunteers:  We need adults to help the kids, ride in the committee boat, and walk the parade.

We need vehicle volunteers:  We need some nice looking tow vehicles with trailer hitches.  Julie has already volunteered her nice looking black Sienna minivan.  I would like to use her minivan for the committee boat and have some member volunteer their nice looking "young and fun" vehicle (like a Jeep Wrangler with the top down) to tow the Sunfish.

Please RSVP  to help out - a great Family Activity!

Ode to the Commodore Nov 10, 2013   Author:  The NSYC Crew

Oh Commodore, Oh Commodore, how much we adore.

Last night we bid farewell to our Commodore.  How grateful we are to have had such a wonderful leader for the past three years.  This past year was geographically challenging and through his leadership we were all able to continue to sail our yachts, paddle our kayaks and boards, and in the end improve our skills as a result.

So THANK YOU Dave Sogin as the NSYC says out with the old and in with the new! Know that we are forever grateful to you!

Sincerely,

The NSYC Crew

Youth Sailing Update Aug 26, 2013   Author:  Steve King

We had a great first day session for our fall youth sailing program.  Nine young sailors participated.  We expect to grow in the next couple of weeks as word gets out.  We have changed the session time to 11 AM to 1:30 PM so that we co-exist amiably with the very successful racing program.  That means that racers should find boats rigged and ready to go on the beach between 1:30 and 2 PM.  Check out our blog on the NSYC Youth Sailing Page for more information about youth sailing.

Sunfish racing Jul 29, 2013   Author:  Ronaldo Borger
Despite what the forecast said, several boats were able to get out and sail yesterday with shifting W - NW winds of about 12 kts, gusting up to 20 kts! We did see a few capsizes, meaning it was a great day to test people's skills.

John Chikos is in first place, followed by David Yanoff in second, and Steve King and Mike West tied in third place.

Comment on Beach Hazard Warning Jul 02, 2013   Author:  Steve King

I think that the rip current warning in the hazard notice is more applicable in today's conditions to beaches at the southern end of the lake.  The conditions today are more like they were on Sunday and yesterday:  two foot surf breaking about 20 feet out.  It would be a real challange to launch small boats, but a great sailing day for experienced sailors once off the beach.

Beach Hazard Warning Jul 02, 2013   Author:  Steve King

Statement as of 9:21 AM CDT on July 02, 2013

... Beach hazards statement remains in effect through late
tonight...

* high wave action and dangerous swimming conditions expected.

* Overview... strong northerly to northeasterly winds with waves
3 to 6 feet will continue through Tuesday night.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Dangerous pounding waves and life-threatening rip currents are
expected at the beaches. People visiting the beaches should stay
out of the water.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars. Rip currents can sweep you out away from shore into
deeper water.

major safety Jul 01, 2013   Author:  Barney

I wanted to report about a near disaster that was fortunately averted. Yesterday, Sunday June 30, the wind was 20 to 28 knots with gusts 30 and more with waves from the north ranging to 5 feet. No NSYC members who came down to Park Avenue went out from the club because of the severe conditions. However, two experienced sailors with a catamaran did launch from Park Avenue around 1:15 pm. For a while they stayed within sight, and we all kept an eye on them.  Eventually, they sailed off to the south and out of sight.  Starting around 2:30-3:00 pm Diane became concerned that they had not returned.  She went to several vantage points with binoculars to see if she could spot them.  She saw that there were three sailboats in the vicinity of Glencoe and Wilmette.  Given the conditions, it was thought the catamaran would harbor in Glencoe and get driven up to pick up their car.

At 5:00-ish, Diane decided to go down to Glencoe and the other south harbors to double check only to discover that they were not any place. She called the wife of one sailor.  He had not reported in, in fact was late for a dinner engagement, and she was concerned.  Diane called the HP police and Coast Guard.

At about 8.00 the HP police reported that two people were spotted off Glencoe presumably by a Coast Guard helicopter.  According to the catamaran crew, the boat had pitch-poled backwards dismasting the boat.  They had drifted and become stuck on the Glencoe Shoal.  The shoal  is a limestone reef that rises to within 2 feet of the surface approximately ¼ mile or so off the Glencoe shore in water that is otherwise around 15-20 feet deep. Given the low lake level the depth could be even less. The Coast Guard used the down wash of the rotor to blow the boat off the shoal and they landed on a beach in Glencoe at 8:30pm where Glencoe paramedics checked them out. Fortunately the water temperature was warm enough so they did not suffer from hypothermia and went home.

Several observations.  Our NSYC rule about two boats for safety comes to mind. They did not have a marine radio, or even a cell phone,  although I hear that will be changing. They stayed with the boat. They were lucky to be spotted before dark. They were lucky that Diane watches out for us. If going out of sight of Park Avenue, letting Diane know where you are heading and an estimated return time would be a wise precaution

Sunfish Workshop Aug 26, 2012   Author:  Leland

We had perfect weather for our final Sunfish Workshop yesterday, or should I say we finally had weather decent enough to hold a Sunfish Workshop.  The previous attempts this summer were unsuccessful due to uncooperative weather..

Attending were Roman Shraybman, Harold Papazian, Ronaldo Borger, Fern Andersen and Michael Horner.

We reviewed everyone's rigging, and paid attention to starting and sail trim as we did several practice races.

Along with the feedback and assistance provided here and on our Thursday night informal racing all are much improved over last year.

NSYC sailors who raced were Janet Ryan, Scott Diamond, Ronaldo Borger and Leland Brode.

Thanks to Jim Irwin, Peggy Malecki and Steve Ryan who helped with the Race Committee.  And special thanks to Barb O'Connell for helping for 3 long days with registration.

If I missed anyone please update the blog.

Also thanks to the club for use of the large inflatable marks, anchors, and extra dollies.

...that wasn't Venus ...it was Steve.........hahahahaha

Venus passing in front of Sun, June 5, 2012 Jul 25, 2012   Author:  Gina Morri

Fellow sailor & friend, Steve Knapp, brought one of his telescopes to our NSYC on June 5, 2012 allowing several of us members to view Venus passing right in front of the sun. This exceedingly rare astronomical event – a transit of Venus – won’t happen again until December 11, 2117. However, a transit of Mercury will take place on May 9, 2016. Lots of thanks to Steve Knapp!

Full Moon Paddle, July 3 Jul 04, 2012   Author:  Gina Morri

The Full Moon Paddle on July 3 was well attended with all club kayaks used. Some new faces/ guests, having kayaked with their own kayaks, also joined us for a delicious spread on the deck afterwards.
Special thanks goes to Tammy, Natalie, Liz, Mary Ellen, Ellie, Bonnie, (and anyone else I've missed) who prepared or brought very tasty dishes / wine to share!
And what a gorgeous moonlit night and fun Wilmette fireworks as seen from the barge!

Thurs. Nite Sailing 6-14 Jun 16, 2012   Author:  Steve King

Another good turnout for informal Thursday night racing.  Rich Chapman, recently back from the Sunfish World's in Curacao, along with several others from the Lake Bluff YC joined NSYC sailors for many short W-L races in light S winds.  Two of our junior racers, Ari Krumbein and Hannah Dannecker, joined the racing.  Both improved their performance with each race.

Thurs Night Sailing 6/8 Jun 08, 2012   Author:  Leland

For our first official Thursday night informal racing we had a light but steady south wind.  Not enough for hiking but we had to sit on the windward side of the boat to keep it flat.

There were 7 boats racing - 4 Sunfish and 3 Lasers.  The Lasers kept it interesting for the Sunfishers.

Present were Commodore Dave, Matt, Steve King on Lasers, and Maureen, Ronaldo, Max and myself on Sunfish.

Thursday Night Sailing Aug 18, 2011   Author:  Leland

The wind looked light and only a few people were hanging out when I got there.  But we ended up with 5 boats, a nice light breeze and w did a few informal races.  Attending were Commodore Dave, Maureen, Gina, myself, and I think I saw Barney actually following us updwind for a brief moment.

Last week we had 8 boats for our informal racing.  We have a few more weeks before it gets too dark so don't miss the rest of the season.

Sunday Sailing/Storm Aug 09, 2011   Author:  Steve King

Great sailing Sunday afternoon.  So great that I along with others didn't notice a storm bearing down from the north.  Thanks to Maureen making a call on Channel 69 to Buc racers and Sunfish sailors carrying hand held radios all boats got to shore before the winds really piped up and torrnts of rain fell.  Makes me think that we should re-think our practice of monitoring channel 69.  If I had been monitoring channel 16, as the maritime radio rules specify, I would have heard the NOAA severe weather alert and got to shore much sooner.  I'd be interested in what others think of this.

Thursday night sailing Jul 29, 2011   Author:  Leland

Last night proved the rule that you have to show up to see if the weather conditions are going to accommodate sailing.

When I arrived at 5:45 there was absolutely no wind.  I spend about 20 minutes helping Steve King check out the race committee equipment for the upcoming Summer's End regatta on September 3rd.  A couple more people showed up and the a slight breeze came in.  So 4 of us - Steve, Ronaldo, Seth and myself had a nice enough breeze to do 4 races on, on flat water, and around a full windward / leeward course.

July 95% Full Moon Paddle Jul 18, 2011   Author:  maureen

...was held last Tuesday, 7/12.  We paddled north to Highwood with a good chop - very disorganized waves in the washtub off the fishing wall, enough to make it interesting.  Paddlers included

Fern Anderson

Alan Cohen

Mary Ellen Davis

Stefanie Gehrig

Maureen Hammond

Peggy Hayner

Bonnie Katz

Leslie & Franz Luxem

Neesa Sweet

Joan Zahnle

The group enjoyed delicious leftovers from "Greek Fest" the previous Saturday!

The next FMP is planned for Tuesday Aug. 16th.  Remember - you can reserve a club boat before the FMP by contacting Alan Cohen. Reservations are strongly recommended.

Sunfish racing Jul 16, 2011   Author:  Ronaldo
We had our first race series of the season on Sunday July 10. We take advantage of the committee boat and infrastructure setup for the Buccs and have some (competitive) fun ourselves. We had great wind day. Come join us every Sunday this season!

Sunfish Workshop Jul 10, 2011   Author:  Leland

We had nine boats for our Sunfish Workshop on the 9th.  The wind was just enough to get us around the course 3 or 4 times.  By the time we were done everyone was sailing upwind with much better control and sail trim by paying attention to the tell-tales on their sails.  The following attended...

  • Alan Cohen
  • Fern Anderson
  • Ronaldo Borger
  • Moureen Hammond
  • Mary Ellen Davis
  • Darleen Smith
  • Steve King
  • Due Nemeira

The next workshop is August 13th.

July 3rd - silver lining Jul 07, 2011   Author:  Maureen
The bad news was that the wind died and we abandoned hopes for sailing. The good news is that we (Ronaldo, Dick & I) paddled up to Fort Sheridan over amazingly clear water. On the return, we noticed a submerged structure that appears to be a shipwreck, off of Highwood. Could this be a section of the "Lady Elgin," lost in a storm in 1861?

Mushrooms Jul 01, 2011   Author:  Ronaldo
With the sudden change in forecast, all we could do was sit at the porch and enjoy the unique culinary experience of eating Steve's chicken mushrooms...

Thursday night sailing Jul 01, 2011   Author:  Ronaldo
New club policy (and note to self)... when sending reminders about sailing or kayaking events, do not comment on the weather forecast. There's a high probability of jinxing what could have been great weather for everyone!

Thursday night sailing Jun 24, 2011   Author:  Leland
The weather was looking questionable but we had four boats and excellent wind last night - 6 to 12 knots. John Chikos, Pierce McCall, myself, and Rich Chapman ( who just returned from a very competitive Sunfish Worlds where he placed 24th) had a great time. We did 4 long races and did quite a bit of hiking.

Sailing Lessons Jun 19, 2011   Author:  Steve King
Saturday, June 18, was nearly ideal: warm temps, steady winds out of the North @ 8 - 10 knots, negligible waves. Great class. Sunday, the 19th, was another story. Very, very light air swinging from SE through S. It was a for students to just keep the boat moving. However, it was a good learning experience in weight placement, keeping the boat moving, and patience. We have a totol of 18 students this year. Experienced NSYC members are encouraged to come on Saturday or Sunday mornings @ 9 am to help the instructors.

Full Moon Paddle Jun 19, 2011   Author:  Maureen Hammond
The first Full Moon Paddle (well, almost full) of the season came off swimmingly last Tuesday June 14 despite cool and cloudy conditions. The group, coordinated and led by Alan Cohen, paddled south to Rosewood Beach into some interesting rolling waves. The moonrise was elusive, as it was cloudy to the east and the sun hadn't yet set (but the sunset skies were gorgeous!) Participants included Leland Brode, Alan Cohen, Mary Ellen and Meghan Davis, Stefanie Gehrig, Gina Morri, Darlene Smith, Neesa Sweet, Ellie Sylvan, Ken whose last name I don't know, and myself - 11 in all. Our fleet of kayaks was well utilized! Refreshments and lively conversation on the deck followed, as the moon revealed itself high in the sky casting a shimmering reflection on the water.

Sunfish Workshop Jun 19, 2011   Author:  Leland
We had a great turnout for our June 18th Sunfish Workshop. We had a perfect wind of around 6 ot 8 knots which allowed us to do several practice starts and some races as well. Participants were - David Ivry, Roman Shraybman, Steve King, Jerry Gherardini, Alan Cohen, Ronaldo Borger, Ellie Sylvan and Gina Morri. The next Sunfish Workshop is July 9th.
